Hessonite Garnet Gomed Gemstone Astrological Benefits
According to Vedic astrology, the primary gemstone for Rahu is the hessonite garnet, also known as Gomed, Gomedha, Pita Rakta Mani, Rahu Ratna, or Tamo Mani in Sanskrit and Hindi.
Rahu is not a planet, but rather a celestial point, mathematically computed where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, known as the ascending node of the Moon. Together with Ketu, they are referred to as "shadowy planets."
Generally, a hessonite garnet is beneficial for Aquarius, Gemini, Libra, and Taurus lagnas (ascendants). It is generally worn when Rahu's major period or sub-period is operating. The cosmic color of Rahu is ultraviolet and belongs to the Air element. Its number is 4.
As the ultraviolet color is beyond our capacity to see it, so Rahu is beyond our understanding of how it influences human destiny. It is a malefic entity per se, yet it can become a fruit-bearing and positive one if well-positioned in your chart.

Also known as the “cinnamon stone,” hessonite is a yellow-orange to reddish-orange to orange-red variety of grossular garnet, with a chemical composition of Ca3Al2(SiO4)3, which is a calcium-aluminum silicate.
Its hardness is 7 to 7.5. There are 2 main colors in the hessonite family. The golden, light orange color is found mainly in Canada (Quebec) and in southern Sri Lanka, specifically in the Kataragama mines.
Then, the cinnamon variety, the darker burnt orange and burnt red hues, found in Sri Lanka, India & Africa.
Hessonite is a borderline Type 2 and Type 3 gem. According to the GIA, Type 2 gemstones are gems that are "usually included", such as sapphires and garnets. Type 3 gems are those that are "always included", such as emeralds. Clean hessonites are therefore rare.
For astrological, Vedic use, an appropriate hessonite can be worn in a ring or pendant. It can be set either in yellow gold or white gold. The stone will need to barely touch the skin of the wearer; therefore, the jewelry setting should be open below the stone.
Hessonite should be worn first on a Saturday, at sunset. If set in a ring, it should be worn on the middle or pinky finger of the right hand for males and on the left hand for females.
If you like, you can silently perform a puja by mentally repeating 18 times the following Rahu mantra:
"Aum Ram Ravahe Namah"
Wearing a hessonite, on a physical plane, may provide relief and protection from:
- Cancer - Intestinal problems - Irrational fears - Asthma and respiratory problems - Mental imbalances - Aid in alcoholism and drug addiction - Malignant diseases
Wearing a hessonite, on an emotional and spiritual plane, is beneficial in many instances:
-To develop spiritual tendencies - Desire to do goodness to others - To boost non-attachment to material goals - On the other hand, to develop charisma to achieve social status, fam,e and power - To aid in meditation, introspection, and the pursuit of spiritual growth
